Aiden

Border Collie

Handler: Karen Skoyec

Aiden was a stray picked up by the sheriff's department and subsequently adopted by my husband and I 2 1/2 years ago.  When I first discovered Aiden, or "Ace" as he was then named, he was literally bald from the waist back (reaction from fleas and other parasites) and emaciated.  When I further inquired about him, I was told he was heartworm positive and would need to stay at Animal Services for a few weeks while undergoing treatment.  That was, of course, fine with me.  I would just visit frequently.  While undergoing heartworm treatment, the shelter experienced a breakout of kennel cough and the facility was quarantined for four weeks.  Sadly, several dogs died during that period and none were allowed to leave.  Aiden was infected so now needed to battle that as well as his heartworm.  Fortunately, he is strong.
Aiden's personality was extremely aloof.  He was completed disinterested in people, not shy or aggressive, but just obviously had never had a relationship with humans.  He was two years old!  Aiden could not walk on a leash and was a runner.  If he got "free"  he would take off and not look back.
Aiden joined our household of three cats and three border collies spending many months in the shadows.  His personality of disinterest took a back seat to the demanding temperaments of the border collies.  I decided last year that I needed to make time for him  without having to compete (not that he wanted to) for my attention.  We started our first beginner obedience class at SOTC last summer.  He flourished as did our relationship.  He is amazingly intelligent and focused.  He loves pleasing me, working, and earning treats (not necessarily in that order.)  He is definitely not a runner now but is glued to my side.  He has become loyal, protective, and constant.  Since our beginner obedience class, Aiden has not only joined the flyball team (his "hands down" favorite activity), but also has trialed in Rally earning his Rally Excellent title,  competed successfully in agility most recently earning four first places in his first NADAC agility trial, and is training to trial in obedience.  Aiden also earned his temperament title and is a certified Canine Good Citizen.  I know we are not supposed to pick favorites with our pets, but if we were, he would be it.  He is a truly amazing soul!
